James Campbell III, a student at Robert Lewis Middle School, is the Natchez-Adams School District’s 2020 Annual Spelling Bee champion.
Sixteen of the best spellers in grades 3-8 competed for the title. Preliminary rounds were held at school to narrow down the field of participants to the top spellers in each grade. Those sixteen finalists then competed at the new Natchez Early College @ Co-Lin Education and Multipurpose Building.
After 17 rounds, the bee came down to two spellers — Frazier Elementary School’s Kendra McDonald, with Campbell emerging as the winner. McLaurin Elementary School’s Ayden Warner placed 3rd. Campbell correctly spelled diaphoresis to claim the title. He will participate in the 2020 Mississippi Spelling Bee Competition on March 10, at 10:00 a.m. at Mississippi Public Broadcasting. The competition will be broadcasted live.
The judges for the spelling bee were Dr. Irene Amos, Aquetta Butler, and YaMika Thomas. The pronouncer was Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell. The district’s annual Spelling Bee is organized by Curriculum Director Alice Morrison.
